Editorial: New world trade tower speaks to New York City’s resilience

It’s often not considered politically correct in Canada to praise the Americans. Lord knows they make mistakes and stomp about the world at times like they own the place. And many Canadians following the debates of U.S. domestic issues, be it gun control, gay marriage, health care or the role of government in society, are often left shaking their heads in wonder.

But setting all that aside, consider for a moment One World Trade Center, the building that will be completed next year on Ground Zero that will replace the twin towers that were levelled by terrorists just over a dozen years ago on 9/11.

While the project has been plagued with issues over the years, its looming completion is a testament to the power of the human spirit. The tower, the tallest in the U.S., is a tribute to the will of New Yorkers, Americans as a whole, and even to everyone in the West, to recover from that terrible tragedy.

When travelling down the path of life, no person, community or nation ever escapes without periodic hardship. Only through perseverance, will and bravery can any of us move past challenges and recover from trauma.

In New York, the evil of terrorism didn’t win. It’s citizens, strong and brave, are standing tall and moving on.
